I recently read in the newspaper an article regarding an injury that occurred at a construction site of a well known building and it made me wonder if they had a Quality Assurance Plan in place when this happened. Apparently a young man of just 25 years of age was a sub contractor at a site operating lift equipment and an accident took place which left him with severe head and chest injuries. Paramedics had to revive him before they transported him to a hospital. This entire incident brought the awareness of construction site safety to the mind of everyone involved. The constuction company feels they had the proper Quality Assurance Plan in place to protect their workers and keep them safe.
Plan needs to be review and adjust when accidents happen even if a Quality Assurance Plan is in place. In order to proceed, it is important to understand what a Quality Assurance Plan is along with the importance and reasoning behind them.
A Quality Assurance Plan actually involves all aspects of a building project, not just risk management. It begins with assigning or hiring a Project Manager to oversee that the plan is put into place and followed. The plan should be a written document outlining what the scope of the project encompasses. Plan provides and spells out all of the aspects, from management up to how the peoples interact and communicate. All the relevant information must be shared to all the necessary persons for the plan to work. A very important aspect of the Quality Assurance plan.
In order to know if your Quality Assurance Plan is actually working, there needs to be checks and balances in place and frequent reviews completed. Adjustments should be made if necessary to your plan. Some constructions company thinks that their plan covers all the aspects, but sometimes accidents still happens. This incident should raise the awareness of any project manager on how important it is to have a thorough Quality Assurance Plan in place and that this Plan should be prepared by a professional. If you do not use someone who is a professional in preparing a plan, you could miss some very important aspects of the plan. There are ways to have a professional, you can look by yourself or have a guidelines from your Quality Assurance Plan. You should be careful that the guidelines are also prepared by a professional, otherwise it may not be effective.
You can not call it a mistake if you learned from it." The lesson you can learn from the construction company that had the critically injured employee is to make sure you have an effective professionally prepared Quality Assurance Plan in place for your next project.
